So how exactly do they make super-smooth paper? 

During the paper-making process, a series of rollers press the sheet to make it flat and even – think of it as “ironing.” This process of pressing and smoothing paper is known as “calendering.” And it is the combination of heat and pressure that makes the paper super smooth.
