Weekly Quiz: Are Hot & Cold Foil Techniques the Same?

PaperSpecs Weekly Quiz: Are Hot & Cold Foil Techniques the Same?

Answer: No.

These are two very different techniques! While hot foil stamping uses a die, heat and pressure to press the foil into the paper’s surface, cold foil transfer is run in line at an offset press. Cold foiling lays down “glue” first, which the foil then adheres to. The benefit is that you can run CMYK right on top, or alongside, your foil and create thousands of metallic tones.
