Weekly Quiz: Name this Binding!

Answer: Smyth-Sewn Binding!

Smyth sewing is synonymous with quality and durability. It’s the binding method for any book that will be used repeatedly, that needs to evoke a certain air of prestige, or that must remain in an open position for extended periods of time – think textbooks, cookbooks, art books and Bibles. For an extra touch of sophistication, leave the spine exposed (see above) and choose a contrasting color for your thread!

Are Smyth-Sewn and Coptic Stitch the same?

Hi Paula. Coptic is actually one of the two most popular “hand-sewn” bindings (the other being “Stab” binding).
Smyth-Sewn binding, on the other hand, is performed by machine. Both frequently feature “naked” spines, which might be why you thought them identical. Hope that helps 🙂
