Weekly Quiz: Which Material Cannot Be Printed On Easily?

Answer: Teflon!

Yep, this makes perfect sense when you think about it. It might just be the only material you can’t print on directly in the exciting world of wide-format printing.

Why do I call it exciting?

Because today’s output devices can print on virtually any substrate, surface, or 3D object.

Some common substrates include:

  • Paper and paperboard
  • Canvas
  • Foamcore
  • Vinyl
  • Plastic
  • Wood
  • Metal
  • Glass
  • Textiles/fabrics (natural and synthetic)
  • Ceramic tiles
  • Rocks

Although wide-format printing has been around for decades, it is really the digital printing aspect that is driving its recent growth.

Items can now be printed in short runs (even a single copy), which makes them economical to produce. They can also be customized or personalized, making them appealing for brand owners.
