Is Paper for Packaging Measured in Pt. or Lbs.?

Answer: Pt.! 

When it comes to papermaking, three variables come into play: weight, caliper (thickness) and smoothness. Mills can only really control two of these.  

Some focus on weight and smoothness, and you’ll see their papers called out in pounds (lbs.): 110 lb. Cover, for example. 

However, when it comes to those that specialize in papers for packaging, paperboard, reply cards, etc., they focus on sturdiness, so their papers are called out by their thickness (caliper), which is measured in point: 8 pt., 12 pt., etc.
