Each U.S. paper category has a specific basic sheet size associated with it. For example, the basic sheet size for Writing papers is 17” x 22.” For Text sheets it is 25” x 38.”
The actual basis weight is determined by weighing 500 sheets of a category’s basic sheet size. So 50 lb. Text means that 500 sheets of 25” x 38” Text weighs 50 lbs.
