Lettra Broadsides

Practically speaking, a broadside is an advertisement. But sometimes, this iconic marketing device is elevated to fine art poster. In the hands of this design and print team, these two broadsides for Crane & Co.’s Lettra stock are definitely keepsakes.

The harmony and layering of various design elements (photography, color, illustration, typography) all combine to satisfy the sense of sight. Interesting tidbits appear everywhere – from tiny dingbats to bold blocks of color.

The sense of touch has been richly rewarded as well. The 100 percent cotton paper is sensual and stimulating (made me want to get my watercolor paints out). Including both letterpress, for which the paper was originally created, and offset lithography techniques shows the timeless versatility of the sheet.

All in all, the broadside is a terrific vehicle, executed with care and intelligence, for this most lovely of products.
