Eco-friendly Calendar

It’s September, and the crop of 2015 calendars is already on retail shelves. So many wonderful themes to choose from and every imaginable format, from the small ones you can tuck in your purse to the large ones you can hang on the wall. Folks trying to be more sustainably minded create ingenious perpetual calendars, but this design from Memac Ogilvy takes that concept to a whole new level.

To tie into their client’s (Volkswagen Middle East) mission to become the world’s most ecologically sustainable car manufacturer, the design team came up with the idea of an everlasting calendar stand that utilizes a smartphone.

As a printed direct-mail piece, the stand connects with recipients in one very important way:  it’s tactile. As a desktop item, it also serves as a perpetual reminder of the client’s desire to lead by example.

Kraft-colored paper, made from 99.9% recycled material, is the perfect choice for the project. The screen printing in white ink gives it that contemporary urban look we love. Construction is great, too: the space for the phone is sturdy (made from several layers of corrugated paper), and a die-cut window allows the phone face to show nicely (also adding to the color palette).
