Job Hunting as Art Form

envelope_125Comedians get it all the time – a person gives them an offended look upon learning their profession, followed by a quick, “You don’t seem funny.” Cue comedian: “Well I’m not doing it now.” And you’d be amazed by the number of designers who aren’t “doing it now” when they pop their portfolio into the post in an attempt to drum up more work.

Not so Austin’s Roxy Torres, who carefully hand drew eye-catching typography on the envelopes she sent to prospective employers. So impressed were some recipients, they informed her that they would frame the envelopes straight away.

Today, Torres is a signmaker and graphic artist for Whole Foods Market – a fact that hopefully will take a bit of the sting out of those Whole Foods prices for you.
