What if you had a superpower but forgot you had it? You and I do this all the time. It’s called digital foiling and it can work miracles like this one.
For this AIGA print, designers created three poster looks, each with different metallic effects, that were printed all in a single run. All thanks to a superpower called toner-based digital flat foiling (aka “sleeking”).
How it Works
First, a digital press laid down toner where the foil was to go. (In most cases that toner is a rich black.)
Then the sheet was run through a foiling device, which applied silver foil to those toner areas.
Then came the fun part: The sheet was sent back through the digital press, and CMYK was printed directly over the silver foil.
With this process, you can create shimmering metallic effects in almost any color combination you can imagine. Best of all, you can create multiple variations of the same print – as was done with this poster – in a single print run!
