Weekly Quiz: Letterpress Creates a Soft ____ Impression

Answer: Debossed!

While the main purpose of letterpress printing is to lay down ink on paper, the press pushes that ink (via a plate) into the surface of your sheet. This results in a clean, sharp imprint.

Depending on the amount of pressure applied during printing, and the softness of your sheet (the softer the sheet the deeper the impression you can make), the plate also leaves a soft DEBOSSING impression. This provides an appealing tactile quality to your beautifully printed piece!
