In PaperSpecs’ upcoming free webinar sponsored by Neenah, explore the power and sophistication of letterpress from a master of the craft, and discover how it can bring out the best in your own design work. too.

Palo Alto, Calif. – October 23, 2018 – In a world grown increasingly smooth and polished, nothing stands out quite like letterpress. From elegant playing card packages to sumptuous business cards with deep impressions, letterpress ia remembered by everyone who encounters it. Though nearly 600 years old, the technique is enjoying something of a renaissance today.

In an exclusive PaperSpecs webinar, Ben Levitz, founder of the inspiring Minnesota letterpress shop Studio On Fire, takes you on a wild ride through the art form in all its variations: from wood cuts and hand-set type to prints made by…steamrollers?

“There’s just something about letterpress, isn’t there,” observes PaperSpecs Founder Sabine Lenz. “No matter how sophisticated offset and digital printing get, letterpress, with its handmade quality and the fingertip-pleasing impressions it leaves, communicates the designer’s thoughts and intentions on an almost spiritual level.”

But to get the most out of letterpress, you have to know what it’s great at, what it isn’t, and how to make your own design work play to the many strengths of this timeless medium.

About Ben Levitz

Starting his career as a graphic designer, the Studio On Fire founder spent nearly a decade working with design leaders at the Kilter, Larsen, and Carmichael Lynch Thorburn design agencies. His creative expertise has focused on design as a branding tool for a large and varied list of national companies with work consistently appearing in award shows, as well as publications of AIGA, Communication Arts, Graphis, Print magazine and the Type Directors Club annual. He has also served as an adjunct faculty member at the College of Visual Arts teaching advanced typography course work. Ben’s tactile design sensibility led to the founding of Studio On Fire in 1999 with the vision of uniquely combining design and print craft. With a growing letterpress shop, Ben left the agency world in 2006 to run the studio full time. Its capabilities now encompass specialty pressure-based printing, including letterpress, foil stamping and engraving. The 20-person Minnesota-based company currently produces its own design work and projects in addition to a massive amount of custom printing work for an impressive list of agencies and design firms worldwide. Making stuff that people actually want, and doing it with love and an expert eye toward detail, is what the studio is all about.
