‘The Teapot Project’ Companion Book

Even in this digital age books remain the go-to physical souvenir of the events we attend and enjoy; something we keep and treasure long after we’ve misplaced the photos we took on our phones. If you were one of the people who checked out The Teapot Project at Australia’s Modern Times Gallery last July, chances are you’d love to snap up this eminently touchable keepsake book printed by our friends at Digitalpress in Sydney.

The exhibition itself features 30 teapots – actually 30 variations on the same teapot – crafted by Australian silversmith Hendrik Forster and metalsmith/object designer Kenny (Yong-soo) Son. Hailing from different cultural, generational and educational backgrounds, the artists worked closely together to “explore the social and historical context surrounding the production and use of the teapot.” Materials used ranged from bright polished 24 ct. gold to copper and red gum.

This marvelous perfect-bound book pays tribute to these shiny materials immediately with its soft touch laminate cover, which features a gleaming teapot in raised Silver digital foiling on 350 gm (130 lb.) Artboard.

Inside, we dive into the creative process with reproductions of the artists’ teapot sketches, as well as detail-rich photographs of those art pieces printed on three different papers, each a perfect match for the contents it displays.

The first two sections covering the designers and their design process are printed on Mohawk Strathmore Premium Wove. [Get Swatchbook] The third – all about the finished teapots – is on Spicers Paper Pacesetter Satin. Arjowiggins Curious Translucents from Mohawk was used to create dividers between each section. [Get Swatchbook]

Each paper brings a different look to the book, and all communicate a texture to the fingertips that practically cries “hand crafted” – perfect for the subject matter at hand. (You can actually order a copy of this book here.)

Digital foiling remains one of the most useful yet least known finishing techniques around. You’ll find everything you need to know about ALL of your foiling options in our Foil Cheat Sheet.
