I’m driven by the energy of New York City, the everyday and the juxtaposition of grit and grandiose beauty.
– Eva Zuckerman
Designer and artist Eva Zuckerman wanted to promote her jewelry brand, Eva Fehren, by celebrating the women who inspire her life and work. The result is “XXI Women,” a hardbound book featuring intimate portraits of 21 of those women along with quotes about what inspires them.
“I’m always searching for ‘who is the Eva Fehren woman,’ ” Zuckerman told Women’s Wear Daily. “And I think what’s so special about jewelry and what’s so important about my brand is that it isn’t just one woman.”
Measuring more than 14.5 inches in height, the crisp black-and-white volume is case bound and Smyth sewn with a dust jacket. (With Smyth sewing, first the pages and then the signatures are physically sewn together using binder’s thread and further reinforced with fabric backing and adhesive to create the most usable and durable books possible.)
The black dust jacket, printed on Neenah Classic Crest Black 80 lb. Text [Get Swatchbook], features the title of the book bold and large in white foil stamping, the best way to guarantee a perfectly opaque white.
The overall result is a bold-yet-elegant cover and an interior filled with striking black-and-white images, along with quotes that seem to jump off the page.
The biggest challenge of the project, says Prestone Press’ Robert Adler, was matching the quality of conventional offset printing while gaining the cost benefits of digital printing for this short run.
