Which Way Should You Fold For Increased Durability?

Answer: Against grain!

Folding against the grain produces a rougher, bumpier fold, but it also helps the paper resist tearing.

That added durability can benefit pocket folders, saddle-stitched pieces and other projects that endure frequent handling.

There is a tradeoff, however.

Folding against the grain increases the risk of cracking, especially across areas with heavy ink coverage. Scoring prepares the paper for folding and helps reduce that cracking.

Ultimately, you must decide which matters more: the smoothest possible fold or greater durability.
