Subscription-box clubs have exploded in popularity recently, and while the concept has been gaining traction over the last few years, the business model has actually been around for quite a while (remember the bygone days of music clubs: Buy 12 CDs for the price of one?).
In exchange for an annual/monthly/quarterly fee, members receive regularly scheduled deliveries of goodies ranging from gardening supplies to grooming products, and kids crafts to craft coffees.
Subscription clubs appeal to consumers for a variety of reasons. Early adopters enjoy discovering and sampling new products, those who consider themselves creatures of habit may enjoy the convenience of regularly scheduled deliveries of their go-to products, while others enjoy the “surprise factor” of a delightful selection of unexpected treats.
The design world has its own share of subscription clubs, including letterpress of the month clubs (TOTA press), art supply clubs (art snacks), and even clubs for those who love paper (The Mohawk Sample Club).
On a quarterly basis, subscribers to The Mohawk Sample Club receive a carefully curated set of Mohawk paper goodness. It’s an example of the brand’s commitment to the maker community and to the culture of well-crafted items.
For Mohawk, the decision to create a club for paper enthusiasts developed organically.
“As a fine paper manufacturer, we believe it’s important to inspire others with print. The Mohawk Sample Club began as a way to share beautiful projects made with Mohawk paper within the creative community. These thoughtfully designed, well-crafted print samples are generally limited in quantity and coveted by paper enthusiasts. It’s truly inspiration in a box,” says Bart Robinson, Senior Vice President Marketing, Mohawk.
Previous Mohawk Sample Club shipments have contained swatchbooks; Massimo Vignelli journals made with Mohawk Superfine; discounts on products from Mohawk partners including Moo and Minted; Mohawk Loop notecards and envelopes; a calendar on Mohawk paper featuring engraving, letterpress, foil stamping and other specialty processes; and past issues of The Mohawk Maker Quarterly.
