FiberMark is green and getting greener. At its headquarters in the Green Mountain state of Vermont, FiberMark has been innovating and investing in environmental initiatives that put it at the forefront of the industry. From FSC certification to biofueled-manufacturing, FiberMark has been hard at work making environmental sustainability the foundation of its business.
FSC is Key FiberMark recently received Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) Chain-of-Custody certification for some colors in its Eviva line, a high-quality, environmentally responsible cover paper with an appealing organic aesthetic.
Made from 100 percent recycled fiber, including 30 percent postconsumer waste, Eviva's nature-inspired FSC-certified colors include wheat, terra cotta and kohl, all of which feature a fiber-enhanced uncoated vellum finish.
With a distinctive natural look and feel, Eviva is available in both a standard cover weight and a 25 pt. heavy weight for projects requiring additional stiffness and strength, and is excellent for foil stamping and silk screening. Eviva also accepts diecutting, scoring and folding, with superior hinge characteristics.
The FSC-recycled Eviva paper has been designed for a range of applications and provides an attractive, earth-friendly alternative for report and document covers, brochure covers, pocket portfolios, journal and notebook covers, invitations, folding cartons and tags.
The FSC's Chain-of-Custody (CoC) certification is an increasingly important issue in the graphic arts industry, driven by customers seeking to align their environmental philosophies with their purchasing practices.
FiberMark's CoC and Controlled Wood Certification verifies the flow of FSC-certified forest products through its supply chain and into its final products, assuring FiberMark consumers that the papers they are choosing are made from trees harvested according to strict environmental standards and forest management practices.
FiberMark's exciting new Eviva line and FSC validation are only part of the story of the company's ongoing commitment to environmental responsibility. The majority of FiberMark's papers are made from renewable wood fiber, and all are elemental and process chlorine free. Many of FiberMark's cover stocks also have a high percentage of recycled and PCW content. And because aqueous coating and ink technology is used in all manufacturing, they contain no ozone-depleting chemicals.
In addition to the environmental friendliness of its products, the company has pioneered a number of green manufacturing and business processes to reduce its reliance on fossil fuels and minimize its environmental impact.
Building a Sustainable Business on (Veggie) Oil In early 2008, FiberMark announced the conversion of the manufacturing operations at its Vermont headquarters to be able to run up to 100 percent used vegetable oil. With this new manufacturing milestone, FiberMark is the first manufacturer in the state of Vermont and in the paper industry to generate part of its process energy from waste biofuel.
The "green steam" produced by the vegetable oil not only powers FiberMark's Brattleboro paper machine turbine and dries its papers, but also provides heat for the entire plant. And most important, it is a renewable resource.
Before the conversion, FiberMark consumed approximately two million gallons of number six fuel oil per year. Switching to used vegetable oil now allows the company to reduce its use of number six fuel oil and to significantly eliminate toxic sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxide emissions, the leading causes of acid rain and common side effects of burning. The vegetable oil burns far cleaner than conventional fuel.
The company's commitment to sustainability doesn't stop there. All the electricity consumed at FiberMark's Brattleboro headquarters is generated from fossil fuel-free sources (hydro- and nuclear power).
FiberMark's sustainability efforts have attracted attention and recognition from local environmental groups, which hold the protection of the pristine Vermont landscape in the highest regard.
Brattleboro Climate Protection, for example, a nonprofit organization that works closely with the Town of Brattleboro to develop effective local solutions to global climate change, recently honored FiberMark with its Sustainable Business Award for the company's innovative, ambitious and successful transition to vegetable oil-fueled manufacturing at its headquarter plant.
Since 2002, Brattleboro Climate Protection has worked with the town to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and promote energy savings at the municipal level. Its current initiative, begun in the fall of 2005, encourages residents and professionals to reduce energy use by 10 percent in their businesses, homes and automobiles.
The organization's recognition of FiberMark is a validation of the company's comprehensive environmental efforts, which yield benefits that go far beyond Vermont to impact everyone who specifies and creates with FiberMark papers.
