A Bold Brochure One such designer, Kristen Hanly, the owner and creative director of DOGSNAME, is an aficionado of unique papers. When a printing representative brought her a sample of FiberMark's Touché, she was hooked.
"I had been researching unusual papers. When I saw Touché, I was immediately drawn to it because of its unique look and feel. What I particularly liked about it was not just its unusual aesthetic qualities, but the fact that it could stand up to handling without scuffing."
Hanly sought an opportunity to use the exceptional paper, knowing that its one-of-a-kind look could deliver a significant design impact. The perfect marriage of project and paper soon emerged.
The developers of Yale Steam Laundry, a new condominium community built around a century-old architectural gem in Washington, D.C., approached DOGSNAME to create a sales brochure that would help them market the units.
Timeless in design and sophisticated in style, the condos are exceptional spaces, and the developers were targeting young, hip, urban professionals to buy them. Hanly immediately thought of Touché.
"It's a really distinctive paper, and was just right for this project. The condos have a very industrial look and feel, which this stock expresses. Its matte black finish has a tactile quality - almost like rubber - that the audience would appreciate. The paper is so rich that it appears almost three-dimensional."
Using 13-point Black Touché Cover, Hanly created a striking cover for the sales brochure that incorporated grommets and silver embossing for a hip but elegant aesthetic. The condominium name and cover graphic were printed using silver metallic PMS, and finished with a clear gloss UV coating.
The final product was stunning. The sleek design and inviting texture of the black cover captured perfectly the "vibe" of the condominiums themselves, achieving the effect the designer and client were hoping for.
The condo owners were delighted with the brochure, which proved to be the perfect tool for attracting prospective buyers. The printer was so impressed by the piece that it submitted it for the Gold Ink Award, the printing industry's most prestigious honor. The brochure won the award in 2007.
An Inviting Invitation FiberMark's distinctive Touché Cover also provided the perfect solution for the Crowne Plaza Hotel Minneapolis Airport West's grand opening celebration. The hotel's objective was to create an invitation that would create anticipation, cause conversation and excite invitees, driving them to attend the gala event and see the newly remodeled facilities.
"We were introducing a renovated property and needed a unique paper to enhance a grand opening invitation," explained Cindy Martin, art director at COLOURS, the marketing communications firm retained by Crowne Plaza to promote the event.
Martin chose FiberMark's silky Black Touché Cover to provide an elegant, upscale image for the invitation and to engage the recipient. The soft matte black surface was printed with silver metallic ink, and clever folds and die cuts were incorporated into the design, for a memorable first impression.
"Touché helped convey an understated elegance that matched the property's interior design. The softness of the stock begged to be touched and literally stopped the invitee upon opening the invitation, generating anticipation for the event."
The combination of Touché's rich, luxurious feel with a clean, sleek design echoed the urban, yet suburban, architecture used in the hotel's renovation.
"COLOURS did a fabulous job capturing, introducing and establishing our new persona through their design work," remarked Marilyne Bouteiller, marketing director for Crowne Plaza Minneapolis. "We had over a 50 percent response rate, with over 400 guests. The invitation received countless compliments as people responded to the event. Everyone loved it."
