Party Arty

Posters are iconic attention-getters – from Toulouse-Lautrec’s classic Moulin Rouge work to the American movie poster.

The best of the genre becomes a coveted item whether you’re a fine art collector or a teen with music mania. Posters combine the best of design elements in a larger format that must still convey its message with brevity and clarity.

So when we received this poster submission for an annual fundraising event at the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art in Kansas City, Missouri, we noticed something very different and quite wonderful happening.

While the front had all the requisite details in reverse type on a background of slate-grey and eye-popping red, the back of the poster had also been printed … with origami templates.

Now here’s a poster that is interactive, fun and a different kind of keepsake. Cut along the solid lines, fold on the dotted lines, and you have a paper crane, paper cup, paper lantern, and paper fan.

The origami idea was all the more admirable as it emphasized the museum’s extension Asian collection and supported the theme of the event (ZEN’D). Ancient art form meets modern day interpretation. Terrific!
