Eco-Innovation Never Sleeps

New Leaf Paper

The best just got better. That’s what New Leaf Paper thinks of Reincarnation, one of the oldest members of its environmental paper family and the company’s flagship grade.

reincarnationNew Leaf has increased the postconsumer waste content in the popular matte coated sheet making it the highest PCW content in today’s domestic coated market.

New Leaf continues its lead as the national source of environmental papers through constant innovation. When they increased Reincarnation’s PCW content from 50 to 60 percent, Canopy Planet in Vancouver took note. Canopy is an independent, nonprofit organization dedicated to working with print industries to support global forest protection and sustainable management.

“I really applaud New Leaf for the leadership they have played over the years,” said Neva Murtha, printer and magazine campaigner from Canopy. “They continue to innovate and increase their recycled content, which speaks to their role in supporting recycled paper markets, and they continually offer the best available eco paper.”

Murtha recognizes New Leaf’s commitment to improve the eco benefits of Reincarnation without affecting the quality of the sheet. “They work with mills on eco paper development, are really at the forefront and they do this before other people are doing it.”

A proven performance on press
Clif Bar, the maker of all natural energy bars, is one of New Leaf’s longtime customers and uses Reincarnation for 90 percent of its marketing materials — everything from sell sheets and posters to coupons and postcards.

According to Sandy Biagi, Clif Bar’s creative operations manager, Reincarnation fits the bill because, “It’s got the matte finish, yet it’s coated enough so the ink sits nicely on it, as opposed to uncoated paper where you get a lot of colors changing and the photos don’t print as well.”

Biagi heeds Clif Bar’s unwritten rule, “that we use recycled paper with the highest amount of postconsumer waste content possible on every print project. Now that Reincarnation is 60 percent PCW, that’s even better.”

Improvements that create conservation

Reincarnation was welcomed with great interest from consumers when it was first introduced in 1998. At that time, it was the only matte coated, 100 percent recycled sheet with 50 percent PCW content available. Now, after more than a decade of improvements, Reincarnation is still the most eco-friendly, matte-coated paper made in North America.

In addition to its recycled content and chlorine-free processing, Reincarnation’s continual upgrades include Forest Stewardship Council, Green-e and Ancient Forest Friendly certifications. Over the course of one year, the additional PCW content saves an additional 7,762 fully grown trees and more than three million gallons of water.

Reincarnation’s increased PCW content not only surpasses any matte coated sheet available in North America, but it also translates to an annual savings of 2,460 million BTUs of energy; 215,788 pounds of solid waste; and 737,957 lbs. of greenhouse gases.

The perfect in-house stock
For Grant, customer service manager at GreenerPrinter in Berkeley, California, Reincarnation’s biggest plus is its “very high reproducibility of color.” GreenerPrinter’s strong commitment to environmental and social responsibility has made them one of New Leaf’s loyal customers.

“After testing Reincarnation and other paper options, it outperformed the other recycled papers on the market,” Grant said. “We’ve kept it as our house stock, and it has been really great for us.” GreenerPrinter uses Reincarnation on 80 percent of its jobs and appreciates New Leaf’s continual effort to improve the quality of the papers it offers.

“The paper is getting better — more options for us as far as thicknesses and sizes go,” Grant said. GreenerPrinter also offers New Leaf Paper’s acclaimed Eco Audit to its customers, such as an architectural firm who produced a very large perfect bound piece on Reincarnation.

“The Eco Audit made the client happy by showing the hundreds of trees that were saved using the recycled paper,” he said. “They can immediately see the difference that they’re able to make, and a lot of people put that data on their Web sites. They’ll actually make a marketing pitch with it.”

Savings for both earth and wallet
Reincarnation users have more than one way to conserve. The paper is competitively priced and is still less than other papers with premium matte coating.

And because it’s a high bulking sheet, there is also the opportunity to conserve usage. Print buyers can take advantage of this by choosing a lower basis weight and using less paper to reduce their overall paper consumption.

Innovation that spells success

Reincarnation Matte is an affordable choice for large-run applications, such as catalogs, magazines and annual reports that will benefit from a quality matte coated paper. The surface provides a refined, nonreflective background for text and the ink gloss affects imagery with a subtle shine.

This versatile sheet is also archival quality with a full range of sizes and basis weights of Text and Cover and is adaptable to most printing needs of offset or digital printing.

Treehugger“There’s nothing like it on the market,” said John Black, New Leaf’s VP of sales. Black thinks being in the vanguard of the environmental paper movement has made New Leaf anything but complacent. “If you establish you’re a market leader,” he said, “your goal is still to continually improve and provide the best papers for your customers.”
