BILLBOARDS

84billboards

The perfect bound book that you see here represents a collection of collages that Dennis Ichiyama created as part of his 2011 Faculty Fellowship for Study in a Second Discipline at Purdue University.

The original collages used the text portions of billboard sheets from the late 20th century. As you might imagine, the letters were huge and of a resolution to allow for viewing of the dots as well as the misregistration. These typically “undesirable” traits create great texture, which came across beautifully even when printed at a smaller scale (e.g. 20 percent of original size) for the book.

The arrangement of the thumbnail images does a great job of capturing that printed-for-a-billboard feel. French folded pages convey a coffee-table quality to the book.

I loved the use of Neenah’s Classic Linen Duplex Cover – the Patriot Blue side added interest to the inside front and inside back covers while the Avon Brilliant White side was used to print the bold primary colors of the title for the outside front and outside back covers. The linen finish was great to the touch.

Two thumbs up on the finishing of this digital print job – surprisingly nice type crossover between pages two and three, plus lovely centered spine copy.
